Ultrasound Devices

Portable ultrasound is disrupting radiology. Thoughts?

  • A (Radiologist): Quality concerns. Handheld devices are convenient for triage, but they lack the fidelity of cart-based systems for diagnostic certainty.

  • B (EMT): Speed saves lives. In a crash, a pocket-sized ultrasound to rule out internal bleeding is a game-changer. We don’t need 4K imaging; we need yes/no.

  • C (Hospital Admin): Cost-benefit is huge. We can place these in GP offices, reducing referrals to specialist radiology by 30%.

  • D (Patient Advocate): My concern is over-reliance by untrained users. Who interprets it? If a nurse misses a mass, who is liable?
